yesterday i saw a single man, nominated for colin firth’s performance. i’m sad that i won’t get to see precious or the messenger before the ceremony, but luckily there are theaters here in austin that are still showing many of the nominated films.
initially, i wasn’t totally convinced i could get into this film. i felt as if i was flipping through the pages of vogue or viewing calvin klein cologne commercials (obsession came to mind first), but after the first 30 minutes, the story, the scenery, the characters, the music, the costumes and the dialogue began to completely envelop me.
i’ve never been much of a fan of juliette moore, but i really liked her as an old (yet still fabulous), chain smoking, gin-drinking british woman. you’ve probably already heard as noted by the academy award nomination that colin firth’s performance was phenomenal. his pain becomes your own and each scene is more poignant because of the way he conveys emotions on the screen.
you’ll fall in love with jim played by matthew goode (match point)…. and whoaaaaa nicholas hoult aka little marcus from about a boy really grew up.
i hope you enjoy this film as much as i did.
