so they say avatar is going to change the way movies are made forever…

with holiday festivities in full swing, my movie watching took a backseat at the end of 2009. i didn’t take the time to watch the avatar trailer until the movie had already been released and i even skimmed over most avatar-related discussion in my google reader. for whatever reason, i was completely uninterested. after a few days of the movie’s release, i started to hear tons of people raving about it and how incredible it is. in addition, the movie got over a 90% rating amongst top critics on rotten tomatoes. fyi - it looks cool… it’s not that great.

i will say that out of the few 3D movies i’ve seen in the theater, this was by far the best. the visuals were nothing short of spectacular. i could have given fuck less to see this movie with out the 3D and as far as 2009 movies go, district 9 told a similar story on less than a tenth of the budget with a better script and a 100 times less cheez. the entertainment value of the film was on par with any of cameron’s other films. it wasn’t a good movie, but damn if it wasn’t entertaining. the colonel was especially amusing because he was unreasonably pissed throughout most of the film without explanation. i found myself laughing during at least five scenes while the rest of the audience remained silent.

several articles i’ve read describe how avatar is going to change the way we watch movies. if this means more 3D, more special effects, more action and less original storytelling (i’m sure it does), than i’m not really into it. i’m not going to lie to you, the 3D aspect is intriguing, but i would definitely prefer a well crafted, original story that happens to have amazing 3D special effects.
