i know i promised a post earlier today, but i’ve been watching A LOT of movies, i’ve been going through some weird stuff lately and sitting down to write has felt a bit daunting…. and to be honest, i love seeing the summer movies, but with the exception of a few, the summer movie season has been rather disappointing so far.
what i think i’ll do for now is write a few sentence summaries for most of the movies i’ve seen recently and then if i feel up to it when i’m finished, i’ll write a couple more long winded wrap-ups. there is only a small possibility i’ll be up to it. i’m in the midst of deadwood season 1, but i just stole one of william’s beers. if i have the faintest hint of a buzz in the next hour, there is a good chance i’ll stay up and write more.
drag me to hell: this was sam raimi’s return to horror and it was definitely a good time, but i think it would have benefited from an R rating instead of the PG-13. there were some scenes that were pretty disgusting, but more gore is always better than going for the gross-out factor. the characters are loser-ish and awful, but it makes the movie hilarious instead of annoying. it wasn’t perfect, but i had an awesome time at the theater.
made of honor: FUCKING HORRIBLE… (see kristin’s post).
up: i honestly didn’t think i’d like this one as much as wall-e or ratatouille, but it was pretty great. i saw it in a sold-out alamo drafthouse and more importantly, in 3-D. the 3-D in this movie was lovely because it enhanced everything without being too distracting. i loved almost everything about this movie. i thought it was sad and sweet and happy and heartbreaking all at the same time. the ideas and imagination that went into this film was stunning and watching the decent of the house into the clouds for the last time warmed my heart a million times over. 5 stars.
the brothers bloom: i went to go see this because i loved brick. that movie turned jason gordon levitt from 90’s teen star (10 things i hate about you) into a total badass. brick is completely different from this flick. this movie seemed very lighthearted despite some darker undertones. rachel weiss is endearing and radiant as always. to me, she seems similar to a juliette binoche of today. needless to say, it was a delight to watch her in this role. the other actors are charming, but in the end, it was just ok. better saved for dvd instead of on the big screen.
the girlfriend experience: BORING- just a bunch of old men talking about the state of the economy. everyone is vapid and i hated the way it was filmed. although, the dismal colors/mood matched an equally uninteresting film.
transformers: revenge of the fallen: michael bay has the absolute most juvenile, tasteless sense of humor. the two new ‘ghetto’ autobots were cringe worthy in every scene they appeared in. he could have easily shaved an hour off of this flick and it still couldn’t have saved it. i honestly really liked the first one…. like REALLY liked it. it was exciting, funny and the actors looked great. part two should have never happened and unfortunately, i hear a part three is already in the works.
the hangover: this one isn’t to be missed if you’re a zach galifianakis fan. the movie is hilarious and fun. sure, it’s cheesy. there is a well chosen rap song to match each party scene and it’s a total dick flick…. but if you love zach, you’ll love this movie. there were tons of little jokes throughout the film that pertain directly to him and some of his stand-up. i’d probably see it again in the theater if someone wanted to take me.
alright, that’s all i want to write for now. this entry doesn’t even cover all the movies i’ve seen this summer season yet. i’m going to try to take a minute or two later this week to expound on true blood (aka the most ridiculous show i’ve ever seen and smallville is my favorite tv show so that’s saying A LOT).
